How to Write Anime-Style Image Prompts - Nano Banana 2
The single most useful thing you can add is a period. “1980s cel animation” gets you thicker lines, limited colour ranges, visible paint texture and heavier shadows. “1990s TV anime” brings flatter shading and that particular slightly desaturated palette. “Modern digital anime” gets clean vector-like lines, soft gradient skin and bright rim light.
Those three phrases produce genuinely different images from the same subject. Adjectives like “beautiful anime girl” do not, because there is nothing visually consistent about beauty. Spend your words on the drawing tradition instead.
Eye treatment matters more than people expect and is worth one clause: large glossy eyes with multiple highlights, or narrow understated eyes with minimal detail. This single choice moves the image between age ranges and genres faster than almost anything else you can write.
Background handling is the other lever. Anime backgrounds are often painted in a completely different style from the characters — soft, detailed, almost watercolour, against flat character art. If you want that contrast, ask for it explicitly, because the model will otherwise render everything at one level of finish.
